Men's Hoops Drops Courtyard Marriott Opener

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

LAREDO, Texas – Taking on their second ranked opponent in three games, the St. Mary's Men's Basketball team didn't have quite the same outcome as the season opener, falling 77-52 to No. 9 Southern Nazarene in the opening game of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic, hosted by Texas A&M International.

The Rattlers (1-2) and Storm (3-2) were delayed approximately 90 minutes due to the volleyball match prior beginning late and the Storm came out firing on all cylinders despite it, shooting 44.8 percent for the game and 40 percent from the three-point line, while their defense held the Rattlers to 37.7 percent from the field and just 18.8 percent from beyond the arc. Neither team went to the free throw line often as the Gold & Blue were 3-for-5 for the game and SNU was 3-for-3.

Sophomore Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) led the team in scoring with 13 points and was the only Rattler to crack double digits, while senior Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) pulled down a season-high eight rebounds to tie for game-high honors. Junior transfer Kobe Magee (San Antonio) once again led the team in assists with six – he also tied for game-high honors – and he turned the ball over just one time in 33 minutes. All eight players who saw action in double figure minutes scored at least four points and had at least one rebound for the Rattlers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) scored the opening basket of the game and the Storm answered with a mini five-point run for the 5-2 score. Gaspert scored again, this time on a layup to bring the Rattlers within one, 5-4 with 17:24 on the clock and SN hit a triple for the 8-4 lead. Sophomore Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) broke onto the scoreboard with a layup and the teams traded baskets for the 10-8 score with 15:03 remaining. The Storm hit another triple and the teams immediately traded layups for the 15-10 tally, followed by two rare free throws for SNU for the 17-10 lead with 12:15 on the clock. The Storm scored the next seven points, until Isenhower snapped the streak at the 8:02 mark with a triple for the 24-13 score. Five points were scored by the Storm but the Rattlers answered with back-to-back baskets to have the scoreboard read 29-17. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the half for the 35-23 halftime score.

The Rattlers began the second half on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to three, 35-32 with 16:43 remaining. Senior Lamont Traylor (Las Vegas) scored the first three points, while three other players each chipped in a basket. The clubs exchanged buckets to 39-36 with 14:53 left when the Storm went on a 13-0 run to open up a 16-point advantage, 52-36 with 10:48 on the clock. A fastbreak layup by senior Curtlon Wesley (Houston) at 9:45 stopped the streak, but the Storm continued on a 9-2 run to push their lead to 21, 61-40 with 7:33 remaining. Back-to-back three-pointers by Isenhower cut into the lead, 61-46, but SNU went on to win 77-52.

INDIVIDUAL & TEAM NOTES
  • Markques Houston recorded a season-high eight rebounds and was just two off his career-high of 10 from last year against Our Lady of the Lake (Nov. 26).
  • St. Mary's was whistled for only eight fouls in the game. It is the lowest total since the Rattlers were called for five against Texas-Permian Basin on Feb. 2, 2012. On only one other occasion since then has the team been called for single digits in foul totals – a contest at DBU in 2016-17 where they tallied nine.
  • The Rattlers have now made at least one three-pointer in 74 straight games, dating back to Jan. 19, 2017.
  • In 21 games last season, Dylan Isenhower scored in double figures twice as a freshman, but he has already hit double digits twice in the first three games in 2019.
UP NEXT
The Rattlers remain in Laredo for the Courtyard by Marriott Classic and face Arlington Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The team then begins Lone Star Conference play at Texas A&M Commerce on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Texas-Tyler on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. before opening the home portion of the 2019-20 season against Schreiner University on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
