Volleyball Drops Match to Falcons

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

ODESSA, Texas – After not facing Texas-Permian Basin a season ago, the two teams renewed their rivalry on Saturday night, with the Falcons defeating St. Mary's Volleyball in straight sets: 22-25, 15-25, 12-25.

The Rattlers are now 7-7 in 2019 and 1-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Falcons improve to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in Lone Star action. St. Mary's is also now 12-10 all-time against UTPB.

Senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) notched a match-high 10 kills, while sophomores Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) had eight and Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) added seven. Senior setter Bree Perry (Houston, Texas) led the team with 12 digs, three blocks and added 24 assists for her fourth double-double of the year and 40th of her career.

St. Mary's hit a season-low .028 for the night, struggling the entire match to string points together, as they never had a run longer than four points.

The Rattlers did out-dig the Falcons 47-to-46 on the night, the seventh time this year the squad has tallied more digs than the opponent and the team is now 5-2 on the year in those situations.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons jumped out to the 7-2 lead in the first set. The Rattlers brought it back to a three-point set, 8-5, but UTPB pushed it back out to six at 16-10. St. Mary's managed to fight back to close within two, 18-16 and the two teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the set for the 25-22 final.

The second stanza was tied at one and two before the Falcons used a four-point run to gain the 6-2 lead. A Tolbert kill stopped the streak, but UTPB scored four of the next five to make the score 10-4. The teams went back-and-forth to 18-12 but the Falcons scored seven of the final 10 for the 25-15 victory.

The third set started similarly, tied at one, two and four, but the Falcons used an 8-0 run after the 4-4 tie to open a large lead, 12-4. Trailing 14-5, the Rattlers used a timeout and scored three of the next four to close within seven, 15-8, but a 6-0 run late in the set gave UTPB the 25-12 win.
