Volleyball Sweeps Texas A&M International

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Volleyball team returned to its winning ways with a three-set sweep over Texas A&M International on Friday evening, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18.

The Rattlers moved back over .500 for the year, improving to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Dust Devils fell to 2-12 on the year and 0-5 in league action.

The Gold & Blue served tough and the pin hitters were extremely effective, lifting the team to its fifth sweep of the 2019 season and snapping a three-match losing skid.

Sophomore outside hitter Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) led the team with her seventh double-double of the year, amassing 14 kills on an outstanding .500 hitting percentage (14-1-26) with 10 digs. Senior outside hitter KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) added 12 kills, while junior right-side hitter Amara Martinez (Houston, Texas) hit .364 on the night (5-1-11) and notched a career-high four blocks to tie sophomore middle blocker Julia Deais (San Antonio) for match-high honors. Sophomore libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) paced the team with 15 digs.

"I was just really hoping to bring energy to the team," Tolbert said. "It was something that we all needed and I was hoping to do that for the team. We were talking about this weekend being a new start to our season and bringing a new team to our game so we can carry on for the rest of the season so hopefully this momentum transfers into tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers trailed 3-1 in the first set, but fought back to tie the score at 5-5 and it was knotted at every point from seven through 10 before the Gold & Blue took their first lead of the match on a Tolbert ace. Sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) and senior setter Bree Perry (Houston) combined for a block for the 12-10 lead. The Dust Devils scored five straight for the 15-12 lead and the Rattlers used a timeout. Five of the next seven points went to the Rattlers, forcing TAMIU into a timeout with the score tied again at 17-17. The teams tied things up at 20-20 and 21-21, but the Rattlers remained focused to pull out the 25-23 win.

The second set was tied at each of the first four points before the Rattlers took an 8-4 edge behind the strong serving of Perry where she had a pair of aces during the stretch and they never lost the lead. Six different times the Dust Devils pulled within one point, including 21-20, but StMU scored four of the final five points for the 25-21 victory.

St. Mary's jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the final stanza, but like the first set the teams were knotted often with 13 ties and six lead changes throughout the set. The score was tied at every point from 3-3 through 14-14 before the Rattlers gained a three-point lead behind the strong serving of freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) and a pair of blocks – one by Deais and Tolbert and one by Deais and Martinez. The Rattlers continued to extend the lead, winning by six, 25-18.
