Middles Shine In Senior Night Loss

SAN ANTONIO – Despite having leads in all three sets, the St. Mary's Volleyball team lost in straight sets on Senior Night to St. Edward's on Tuesday evening, 21-25, 23-25, 24-26.

The Rattlers (9-13, 3-10 Lone Star) got terrific production from their middle blockers in the match as neither player made an error on the night. Sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the team with 10 kills on 23 swings, hitting .435, while sophomore Julia Deais (San Antonio) had eight kills on 13 swings and hit .615. Deais also led the match with five blocks as the Gold & Blue out-blocked the Hilltoppers (14-7, 9-3 Lone Star) 8.0-5.5 on the night.

Senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) who was honored prior to the start of the match – along with fellow senior Bree Perry (Houston, Texas – led all players with three aces and she added eight kills. Junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) paced the team with 12 digs and junior Amara Martinez (Houston) tied her career-high with four blocks – including two solo stops.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set was tied at every point from 1-6, then again from 8-12 before the Rattlers scored three straight on two aces by Payne sandwiched around a Deais kill for the 15-12 lead. The Hilltoppers answered with a three-point run of their own to tie things up again at 15-15. Ties at 16, 18 and 20 had fans on the edge of their seats when St. Edward's scored a pair and forced a Rattlers timeout at 22-20. A Payne kill brought the Gold & Blue within one, but the Hilltoppers scored the final three for the 25-21 win.

The Rattlers scored the first three points of the second stanza and pushed their lead out to seven at 17-10 after they blocked three of four points, forcing St. Edward's into a timeout. The Hilltoppers came out of the break and outscored the Rattlers 15-6 for the 25-23 win.

St. Mary's again took an early lead in the third set, leading 3-1. SEU tied the score at 3-3 and tied at 5-5, the Rattlers used a 3-0 run for the 8-5 lead. St. Mary's hung onto the lead until 19-19 and a big kill by Deais, followed by an ace by Payne and a block by Deais and Tolbert pushed the lead back to three at 22-19. The Hilltoppers called a timeout and they fought back to tie the score at 23-23. The teams traded points to 24-24, but SEU recorded the final two kills for the 26-24 win.

INDIVIDUAL & TEAM NOTES
  • Senior Bree Perry served the first point of the match for the Rattlers, despite her injury. She and fellow senior KK Payne were honored prior to the match for their contributions to the program. Perry finishes her career at St. Mary's ranked third all-time in career assists with 3,170.
  • KK Payne recorded her 200th kill of the season in the match and now has 205 in 2019. She has 432 in her career with the Rattlers.
  • Lindsey Kaufman (Coral Springs, Fla.) became the seventh player on the roster this season to record double digits in service aces with her one against St. Edward's. Kaufman now has 10 in 24 sets played. Perry leads the team with 21, while Jasmine Sims is second with 18.
  • For the seventh time this season the Rattlers recorded more service aces than errors, acing the Hilltoppers six times with just three miscues. St. Mary's also now has more aces on the season than errors with 119 aces and 118 errors.
  • St. Mary's hit over .200 in back-to-back matches for the first time in a month as they hit .218 at Cameron on Saturday and .222 against the Hilltoppers. The last time they managed the feat was .230 against Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 27 and .207 against West Texas A&M on Sept. 28.
  • Three times in the last four matches the Rattlers have posted three solo blocks and the 20.0 combined total blocks in the last two matches is the highest total for back-to-back matches in 2019.
UP NEXT
The Rattlers travel to Austin to face the Hilltoppers on Friday on their home court at 6 p.m. St. Mary's closes out the 2019 home portion of the schedule the following weekend, hosting Lubbock Christian on Friday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. (note the time change) at UIW and Angelo State on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at Paul Taylor Fieldhouse.
