Volleyball Falls In Four At St. Edward's

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

AUSTIN, Texas – Playing your rival in back-to-back matches is never easy, but the St. Mary's Volleyball team improved slightly on Tuesday, taking a set from St. Edward's on Friday night in Austin but eventually losing in four, 19-25, 25-23, 15-25, 13-25.

Despite taking a set, the Rattlers (9-14, 3-11 Lone Star) struggled on offense, hitting only .014 for the match – a season low – and no players reached double figures in kills. Senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) led the club with nine kills, while both freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) and sophomore middle blocker Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) added six each.

Junior setter Haley Bradfute (New Braunfels) posted her third double-double of the year with 18 assists and a career-high tying 15 digs. Junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) added 13 digs, while Slusser chipped in 10. Sophomore Julia Deais led the team with five blocks – giving her at least five blocks in three straight matches and four of the last five for the Rattlers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set. A block by Deais and junior Amara Martinez (Houston, Texas) cut the deficit to three, 12-9, but the Rattlers were unable to get any closer in the set, falling 25-19.

The Rattlers took the early 4-1 lead in the second stanza behind three kills by Slusser. SEU battled back to knot the score at 5-5 for the first tie of the match, but the Rattlers went on a 4-0 run behind the tough serving of Slusser for a 9-5 advantage. The Hilltoppers were able to manage another tie at 16-16, and the score was tied six more times to 23-23, when the Rattlers scored the final two points, including the final point on a kill by Payne for the 25-23 win.

In an inverse of the second set, SEU took the 4-1 lead in the third set and the Rattlers fought back to close within one, 6-5, but at 8-7, the Hilltoppers went on a 10-1 run to blow open an 18-8 lead and went on to win 25-15.

The first four points of the final set went to the Hilltoppers, but the Rattlers battled to tie things up at 5-5. A 4-0 SEU run gave them the lead for good and they won 25-13.
