Volleyball Sees Lead Slip Away At Cameron

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

LAWTON, Okla. – Despite career days from sophomores Julia Deais (San Antonio) and Rachel McDonald (Indianapolis, Ind.), the St. Mary's Volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker at Cameron on Saturday afternoon in five sets after winning the first two 25-21, 30-28, 22-25, 20-25, 13-15.

The start of the match was delayed almost 90 minutes as Cameron (6-16, 2-10 Lone Star) experienced a campus-wide power outage, but it didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the Rattlers (9-12, 3-10 Lone Star) as they started off strong, hitting .263 and .255 in the first two sets, respectively, well above their season average of .169.  The team ended the match hitting .218, which is the highest hitting percentage in a true road match this season.

Deais led the team with a career-high 14 kills and hit a team-best .344 (14-3-32), while McDonald tied her career-high with 10 kills and hit a career-best .304 (10-3-23). Deais also led the club with five blocked shots, while McDonald tied her career-high with four as the team had a season-high 12 total blocks on the afternoon.

Sophomore outside hitter Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) posted her eighth double-double of the year and the 18th of her career with 11 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) was the fourth Rattler to record double figures in kills with 10 – seven of which came in the second set. Junior setter Lindsey Kaufman (Coral Springs, Fla.) also tallied a double-double in the match, recording a career-high 43 assists to go along with a career-high tying 10 digs. It is the first double-double of her career and she also paced the team with three aces. Junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) led the team with 18 digs and freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) joined her in double digits with 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cameron jumped out to the early 3-1 lead in the opening set, but the Rattlers recorded four-straight kills by Sims, Deais and a pair by McDonald to take the 5-3 lead. The Aggies fought back to knot the score at 6-6 and it was tied at every point until 9-9 when the Rattlers scored three straight on a block by Sims and junior Amara Martinez (Houston, Texas), a kill by Tolbert and a Kaufman ace for the 12-9 tally. Cameron answered with a five point run of its own to take a 14-12 lead, but the Gold & Blue scored seven of the next eight points – including a six-point run – for the 19-15 score. After a quick CU point, St. Mary's rattled off another three straight to stretch the lead to six, 22-16. Cameron scored four of five to cut its deficit in half, 23-20, but Haley Bradfute (New Braunfels, Texas) and Tolbert recorded kills sandwiched around a Cameron point for the 25-21 final. McDonald led the team with four kills on six swings in the set.

After CU scored the first point of the second set, the Rattlers scored the next four and the scoreboard read 4-1. The Aggies worked the score back to a tie at 8-8. Trailing 10-11, the Rattlers used a five-point rally with three kills by Sims and a block by McDonald and Kaufman for the 15-11 lead. CU answered, knotted the score at 17-17 and continued on, taking a two point lead at 19-17. The Rattlers scored back-to-back points for the sixth tie of the set at 19-19, but CU took a 24-21 lead. Tolbert recorded a kill, stepped back to the service line for a point and Sims added a kill for the 24-24 tie. The teams went back-and-forth until StMU scored the final two points on CU miscues for the 30-28 win. Sims led all players with seven kills on 13 swings in the second stanza.

The third set was tied at 1-1 before the Aggies scored three quick points for the 4-1 lead. StMU fought back with some timely blocks to knot the score at 6-6. Slusser served an ace to take the first lead of the set, but it was short lived as Cameron went on a four-point run for the 10-7 score. A block by Tolbert and Deais finally knotted the score back again at 17-17, but once again CU had an immediate answer, scoring back-to-back points and they never relinquished the lead, winning 25-22.

The fourth set was very similar to the third, in that it was tied at 1-1 and CU took the lead, but StMU fought back to tie things up a short time later. The Rattlers tied the score at 5-5 on a Tolbert-Deais block, but once again a four-point run by the Aggies gave them a lead – and they never trailed again. The Rattlers cut it to one at 17-16 on an ace by Kaufman and 20-19 on a kill by Deais, however the Aggies scored five of the final six points for the 25-20 win.

The final set was tied at every point from one through five when Deais blasted back-to-back kills followed by one by Tolbert for the 8-5 Rattlers lead when the teams switched sides. A CU miscue lifted the lead to four, but Cameron remained focused and knotted the score at 13-13, then scored the final two points of the match for the 15-13 victory.
