Volleyball Struggles at UAFS

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The St. Mary's Volleyball team struggled at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday night, getting swept 25-12, 25-21, 25-17.

The Rattlers are now 9-11 overall and 3-9 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Lions improve to 17-5 on the year and 10-1 in league action.

Sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the way with seven kills and a .250 hitting percentage (7-3-16), while senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) added six kills as the two combined for half of the team's kills on the night. Junior Lindsey Kaufman (Coral Springs, Fla.) led the team with 15 assists and junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) led the way with nine digs. Both Julia Deais (San Antonio) and Rachel McDonald (Indianapolis, Indiana) had two blocks each and Payne had the club's only ace of the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions scored the first two points of the opening set and they jumped out to an 8-3 advantage. The Rattlers cut it to three, 12-9 on a Deais- McDonald block, but UAFS used a 9-0 run after that to open a 21-9 lead. StMU scored two of the next three points but the Lions won 25-12.

The second set was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before UAFS used a five-point run to take the 7-2 lead. They stretched it to eight, 18-10 when the Rattlers scored five of the next six to cut the deficit in half, 19-15. UAFS scored three straight and StMU immediately answered with a five-point run of its own for the 22-19 tally. The Rattlers couldn't get any closer however, and fell 25-21.

UAFS scored the first four points of the third stanza and led 14-6 before the Rattlers went on a five-point run to cut the score to 14-10. It was as close as the Gold & Blue could get in the final set, falling 25-17.

INDIVIDUAL & TEAM NOTES
  • The 26 kills by St. Mary's ties for the lowest of the season (at Texas A&M Commerce, Oct. 15).
  • The one service error is also a season low for the Rattlers. The previous low was two miscues against Texas A&M International on Oct. 11.
  • St. Mary's is now 5-7 this season in three-set matches and has lost its last three.
  • The Rattlers are now 4-20 all-time against UAFS.
  • Sophomore Julia Deais recorded her 50th career block assist in the match and now has 51. She has 58 career total blocks in 34 matches played.
UP NEXT
The Rattlers travel to Lawton, Okla., to renew a rivalry with Cameron. St. Mary's is 8-2 all-time against the Aggies and the teams have not faced each other since 2012. Earlier on Friday, Cameron lost to St. Edward's in three sets and is 5-16 on the year and 1-10 in the Lone Star. The Rattlers return home on Tuesday, Oct. 29 to host rival St. Edward's at 6 p.m. for Senior Night as it will be the last match at Bill Greehey Arena. The team plays two more matches in San Antonio, but they will not be on the St. Mary's campus.
