Tough Serving Lifts Volleyball Past DBU

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – With their backs against the wall, the St. Mary's Volleyball team rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets against Dallas Baptist and snap a three-match losing skid. The Rattlers won 19-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10 to improve to 2-3 in five-set matches.

The Rattlers (9-10, 3-8 Lone Star Conference) used strong serving and defense to keep the Patriots (12-10, 4-6 Lone Star) off balance all afternoon as the teams battled through 28 ties and 13 lead changes in the five sets. In the 39th meeting between the two teams, the Rattlers avenged a four-set loss from earlier in the year to improve to 17-22 all-time against DBU.

Junior Lindsey Kaufman (Coral Springs, Florida) energized the team in the fifth set, serving three of her career-high five aces in a four-point stretch to give the Rattlers a 13-8 lead – and the other point was a kill by the setter who moved into the starting rotation just this week with the injury to senior Bree Perry (Houston, Texas). Kaufman's five aces are tied for the third-most in school history in a five-set match and she also added a season- and match-high 29 assists. Fellow junior Haley Bradfute (New Braunfels, Texas) added three more of the team's 12 aces – and they came in the first four points of the second set. She also tallied her second-consecutive double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs – both season-highs.

Sophomore middle blocker Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the match with a career-high 18 kills and hit .452 (18-4-31) to lead all players, while sophomore opposite side hitter Julia Deais (San Antonio) had a career- and match-high seven blocks. Junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 23 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Gabi Sandoval (San Antonio) had a career-high 15 digs.
Freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) recorded her second double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs, notching a career-high in kills and tying her high in digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers scored the first two points of the match, but the Patriots responded with the next three. After a kill by Deais, DBU scored four straight for the 7-3 lead. Four of the next five points went to the Gold & Blue as they closed within one, 8-7, but the Patriots used a five-point run to stretch the lead out to 13-7 and went on to win 25-19.

The second set was tied at every point from 1-4 before the Rattlers went on a 7-0 run for the 11-4 lead. Sandoval served two aces and had some key digs during the run and Sims added two kills. DBU fought back to tie things up at 13-13 and the score was also tied at every point from 14-17 before StMU scored three straight on a block by Sims and junior Amara Martinez (Houston), one of Kaufman's five aces and a kill by Sims. The Rattlers held on for the 25-20 win.

Bradfute got the Rattlers out to a 4-0 start in the third set with three aces, while Deais and Slusser teamed up for a block, but the Patriots fought back to knot things up at 6-6 and kept the run going to take a 9-6 advantage during a 7-0 rally. Four of the next five points went to the Rattlers to tie things at 10-10 and the score was also tied at 12, 13 and 16 before the Patriots won 25-20.

The Rattlers again scored the first two points of the set, but the Patriots immediately answered for the 2-2 tie. The teams traded points to the 3-3 tie and back-to-back points for the Gold & Blue gave them a 5-3 advantage. They held the lead until DBU tied things at 14-14 and 15-15. The Patriots took a two-point lead at 17-15, but the Rattlers fought back to tie things at 19-19 on a Payne ace. The score was tied at every point through 23-23 when the Rattlers got back-to-back kills by Payne and Deais for the 25-23 victory.

StMU jumped out to the 3-1 lead, but once again the Patriots fought back to tie things at 7-7 and 8-8. After a kill by Payne to give the Rattlers the 9-8 lead and the serve, Kaufman stepped to the line and served back-to-back aces, forcing DBU into a timeout. Kaufman recorded a kill and another ace for the 13-8 advantage when a DBU kill stopped the streak. A service error by the Patriots set up match point, but it would be delayed one point after they got a block. Sims recorded her 18th kill to end the match for the Rattlers with the 15-10 victory.

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Haley Bradfute posted her second-straight double-double with a season-bests in assists (19) and digs (11). She also added a season-high three service aces – all coming in a single stretch to begin the third set. • Jasmine Sims recorded a career-high 18 kills, bettering her previous high of 13 from Sept. 13 against Southwest Baptist. Sims also led the match with a .452 hitting percentage (18-4-31).
  • For the first time in her career, Gabi Sandoval recorded two aces in a match. Five other times she's had one ace. Sandoval also had a career-high 15 digs, surpassing her previous best of 14 she tallied against Texas A&M Kingsville on Oct. 12.
  • Shea Slusser recorded her second double-double of the year with a season-high 13 kills and she tied her high with 14 digs. Her previous career-high of 12 kills came last week against the Javelinas.

The record in a five-set match is seven by Samantha Weber against DBU on Nov. 2, 2007.
  • The 12 aces by the team also ties for the fifth most in a five-set match and is the second-highest total by the 2019 team. The 15 by the club against Southwest Baptist on Sept. 13 is the third-most in school history in a four-set match (since 2000).
  • For the sixth time this year, the Rattlers had more service aces than errors with 12 aces and seven errors and they reached double figures in aces for the third time in 2019.
