Volleyball Uses Balanced Attack Against #23 Texans

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Volleyball team used a variety of looks on Friday evening, but came up short against 23rd-ranked Tarleton State, falling in three sets 25-15, 25-19, 25-16.

The Rattlers moved to 8-10 overall and 2-8 in Lone Star Conference play with the second loss of the year to the Texans, while Tarleton State improved to 12-6 overall and 6-3 in league action.

St. Mary's had a balanced attack on the evening with a trio of players each getting six kills to lead the team in senior outside hitter KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas), junior opposite hitter Amara Martinez (Houston, Texas) and freshman outside hitter Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas). Martinez also hit a team-best .385 (6-1-13) for the match.

Haley Bradfute (New Braunfels) recorded her first double-double of the season and her sixth as a Rattler with 14 assists and 10 digs – both of which are season-highs for the junior who saw her first start in one of the setting positions. Slusser led the team with 14 digs, while junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) also notched double figures with 12. Sophomore middle blocker Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the club with two blocks and she had one of the team's two aces on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tarleton State jumped out to the early 5-1 lead in the first set, but kills by Payne, sophomore Julia Deais (San Antonio) and Sims and back-to-back blocks by the Rattlers gave them the 6-5 advantage. The Texans immediately answered with another four-point run for the 9-6 lead and they never trailed again, pushing the lead to as many as 10 with the final point, 25-15. Both Deais and Payne led the way with three kills each in the set.

TSU again took an early lead in the second stanza, going ahead 7-1 before the Rattlers fought back to close within one at 10-9. Leading 11-10 the Texans scored six of the next seven to regain a six-point edge, 17-11 and they went on to win 25-19.

St. Mary's led 3-1 in the final set and TSU used its only timeout of the night. The Texans fought back to take the lead at 7-6, but a kill by Martinez tied the score at 7-7 for the third time. Another Martinez kill gave the Rattlers the 8-7 lead, but TSU scored eight of the next nine points for the 15-9 advantage and they went on to win 25-16.
