Volleyball Starts Busy Week With Loss at #25 Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – Facing its first of two ranked opponents this week, the St. Mary's Volleyball team faltered at No. 25 Texas A&M Commerce on Tuesday evening, 25-18, 25-16, 25-15.

Meeting the Lions for the first time since 2013, the two teams evened the all-time series at 4-4 as the Rattlers fell to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in Lone Star Conference play with the loss.

Sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the Rattlers with nine kills, a .467 hitting percentage (9-2-15) and four blocks, while freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) added six kills – four of which happened in the first set. Junior Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) led the team with 11 digs, while senior Bree Perry (Houston, Texas) had 10 assists before leaving the match due to an injury.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers struggled in the first set, going down 9-3 early and they never recovered. Slusser led the team with four kills on five swings with one error and she added an ace.

The second set started out much closer as it was tied at every point from 1-4 and seven before the Lions scored five of six point to take a 12-8 lead. The Rattlers battled back to knot the score at 14-14 with an ace by sophomore Julia Deais (San Antonio) and three straight kills by Sims, but Commerce scored 12 of the final 14 points in the set for the 25-16 win. Sims had four kills in the set, while she and Payne combined on a block and junior Lindsey Kaufman (Coral Springs, Florida) also added an ace.

Texas A&M Commerce took a 6-3 lead in the third set, but the Rattlers knotted the score up with a pair of blocks – one by Sims and junior Amara Martinez (Houston) and a solo stuff by Sims. The Lions answered with a 5-0 run and scored six of the final eight points for the 25-15 victory. Sims added another four kills in the final set.

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Jasmine Sims tied her career-high with four blocks in the win. She also had four against Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 27.
  • The Rattlers had three service aces and three errors, marking the seventh time this year the team has either been even or positive in aces to errors.
  • The 11 reception errors by the Rattlers are the most this season.
