By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's Community is saddened by the passing of former head baseball coach Elmer Kosub.

Kosub, who died on Aug. 22 at the age of 95, will be remembered for the lasting impact he left on his alma mater.

The San Antonio native graduated from St. Mary's in 1954 and would spend 27 years as head coach for the St. Mary's Baseball program, establishing a culture of excellence that has continued to this day.

Named to the St. Mary's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987, Kosub collected 16 conference titles and is second all-time in school history with 501 career victories.

Additionally, he served as the university's athletics director from 1961-1976 and was a strong influence in the opening of V.J. Keefe Field – now known as Dickson Stadium – which also served as the home for the San Antonio Missions for 30 years.

His impact reached beyond San Antonio as he played a key role in growing the game of baseball internationally, serving as an ambassador for the sport in Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Guatemala, Japan and the Philippines. For his contributions, Kosub was inducted to the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1980.

Kosub is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris Ploch Kosub, five children and six grandchildren.
