Perez, Fernandez-Beltran highlight Heartland Baseball selections

SAN ANTONIO — On the eve of the Heartland Conference Baseball Championships, it was announced that five Rattlers were named to the All-Conference First Team.
 
In addition to the first-team selections, Donnie Perez and Fernando Fernandez-Beltran received individual honors with Perez claiming Player of the Year and Fernandez-Beltran earning the Newcomer of the Year.
 
Perez paced the Rattlers offensively during the year, batting .348 with a team-leading nine home runs and 46 RBI. Slugging .614, he led the conference with 18 doubles and 45 runs scored.
 
On the mound, Fernandez-Beltran emerged as the Rattlers' No. 1 starter, posting an 8-4 record with a 2.01 ERA. In 13 starts, the senior tossed nine-complete games and four shutouts in a team-leading 89 2/3 innings pitched.
 
Joining the duo on the first team were third baseman Jacob Aguilar, outfielder James Davison and pitcher Zach De La Garza.
 
Aguilar finished sixth in the conference in batting average while Davison was tops in stolen bases. De La Garza finished tied for second in the Heartland in wins by a pitcher with nine and was fourth in strikeouts with 76.
 
Thursday, the No. 2 Rattlers will open the postseason with a matchup against No. 3 Lubbock Christian.
