Phillips, Medina lead Rattler comeback in regional opener

CANYON, Texas — "This is the time of year where you know you're battling against the best," head coach Donna Fields said following St. Mary's 7-5 victory over Texas Woman's on Thursday at Schaeffer Park in the opening game of the NCAA South Central Regional.

The Rattlers fell behind early in the game before striking for seven unanswered runs.

"We had a tough first inning, got down 3-0," Fields said. "(We) told the girls to find ways to execute and find ways to score runs."

That is exactly what the Rattlers did as Miranda Medina put the opening runs on the board for the Rattlers with a two-run homer to left in the third.

An inning later, Elizabeth Phillips tied the game on a Jeterian-like home run to the opposite field in right.

Phillips would add to her monster game with a two-RBI single that capped a four run outburst by the Rattlers.

Jorden Russell picked up the win in the circle after putting in over five innings of work while Ashley Mills collected her fifth save of the season, dismissing any hopes of a Pioneer comeback.

The Rattlers will face the winner of the West Texas A&M/Tarleton State game in the winners bracket tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
