Rattlers win thriller over No. 4 West Texas A&M

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CANYON, Texas — Exactly one year after its season ended at the hands of West Texas A&M, the St. Mary's Rattlers defeated the Lady Buffs to advance to the final of the South Central Regional Tournament with a 1-0 victory at Schaeffer Park.

"To win a 1-0 game is sweet," head coach Donna Fields said postgame. "It was a well fought game by both teams."

The lone run of the game came courtesy off a lead-off homer to the left-centerfield bleachers by Raynelle Nash.

"I told myself 'The first pitch you see that's good, you need to go ahead and take a hack at it,'" Nash recollected.

Junior Hope Russell got her second start in two games and delivered a solid, bounce-back performance. Russell kept the Lady Buffs off the board, allowing only one hit in 3.1 innings of work before turning the reigns over to Ashley Mills.

Mills would match Russell's effort allowing only one hit in 3.2 innings pitched as she collected her 15th win of the season.

West Texas A&M managed to load the bases with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Mills and the Rattlers were up to the challenge as a ground out to second baseman Kristal Salinas ended the ballgame.

St. Mary's will play for the chance to advance to its fourth straight Super Regional tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
