#5 Softball stunned at home, drop doubleheader to Jets

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The usually high-powered St. Mary's offense was uncharacteristically held to only one run against the Newman Jets during Friday's doubleheader at The Park at St. Mary's.

With their offense stalled, the Rattlers dropped their first two games at home this season after entering the afternoon 11-0 at home.

Game 1 saw the Rattlers fall 1-0 despite another multi-hit game from Raynelle Nash who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

Brenda Iparraguirre, Olivia Van Hook, Kristal Salinas and Miranda Medina each registered a hit as the Rattlers failed to score a run in a game for only the second time this season.

Jorden Russell pitched 5.1 innings allowing only one run on seven hits and two walks as she struck out three in the loss.

The second game of the doubleheader did not see many changes as the Rattlers continued to struggle offensively.

Marcela Vasquez, Van Hook and Medina accounted for the three hits for the Rattlers in a ballgame that saw no earned runs between the two sides.

In relief, Ashley Mills threw three perfect innings, striking out five of the nine batters she faced.

St. Mary's and Newman will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at The Park at St. Mary's with first pitch slated for noon.
