Rattlers defeat Newman, inching closer to outright Heartland title

DALLAS — St. Mary's Men's Tennis knocked off Newman 6-3 on Friday, securing no worse than a tie for the best record in the Heartland Conference in the regular season. 

The Rattlers will take on UAFS on Saturday morning in the regular-season finale.

Despite falling behind 2-1 in singles, St. Mary's (14-6, 3-0 Heartland Conference) dominated singles play, winning five of the six matches. 

It started at No. 1, where Michael Maciel defeated one of the conference's preeminent players, Eduardo Santos, who is ranked No. 27 nationally. Maciel prevailed in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 10-4. 

The Rattlers also took lines 2-5, headlined by Jeremiah Gonzalez at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-0. Jose Antelo was also victorious at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3, as was Adam Dockery at No. 4, winning 6-1, 6-1. Alex Joseph rounded things out at No. 5, topping Enrique Coiras 6-1, 6-1.
