Men's Tennis cruises past DBU for 2-0 start in conference play

DALLAS — St. Mary's Men's Tennis improved to 2-0 in Heartland Conference play with Thursday's 8-1 victory over Dallas Baptist.

Jose Antelo provided the fifth and clinching point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Nick Gilmore. It was one of six Rattler victories in singles, as the No. 22-ranked Snakes swept the side at the Kiest Tennis Center.

Michael Maciel got a big win at No. 1 prevailing 6-2, 6-2 over Cannon Jones. Adam Dockery kept it going at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-0. Alex Joseph fought the toughest battle against Riley Smith, using three sets to win at No. 4. Richard Foley and Bojan Popovic also won big at No. 5 and 6, respectively.

Earlier, St. Mary's dropped the No. 1 doubles match, but won the other two to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Jose Antelo and Michael Maciel prevailed 8-3 at No. 2, while Popovic and Joseph cruised, 8-0, at No. 3.

St. Mary's will continue Heartland Conference play Friday with a 9 a.m. matchup against Newman in Dallas.
