Aguilar's walk-off bunt leads to split against TAMIU

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's clawed back from a six-run deficit to take a stunning, 8-7 victory in extra innings over visiting Texas A&M International on Thursday.

The Rattlers won the front end of a doubleheader when Jacob Aguilar laid down a perfect bunt with bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, bringing home James Gillean for the walk-off victory at Dickson Stadium. St. Mary's (14-18, 7-4 Heartland Conference) dropped Game 2, as TAMIU hit a two-run home run in the seventh to win 2-0.

The thrilling finish in the opener came in stark contrast to how the game began, as the Snakes staggered to a 7-1 deficit.

But then they got going.

Beau Barnes drove in one run in the fifth, another crossed due to an error and Jack Kaiser brought in a third on a sacrifice fly. Suddenly, the Rattlers were down 7-4 — with renewed life.

Then came the seventh, when Kaiser struck again with a two-RBI double to left-center field that deadlocked things at 7-7. Earlier in the inning, Gillean crossed home on a wild pitch.

John Lynch earned the victory in relief following 3 1/3 sparkling innings on the mound. He allowed just one hit over the span.

Gillean was 4 for 4 with three runs scored, while Barnes drove in a pair of runs on a 2-for-4 outing. Kaiser had three RBI on one hit, while Aguilar and Javier Camacho each recorded multiple hits.

The teams will close out the three-game series Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
