Sweet 16: @StMUsoftball clinches #1 seed in Heartland Conference

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — For the 16th time in 17 years, the St. Mary's Rattlers have won the Heartland Conference Championship.

The Rattlers clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference after defeating rival St. Edward's twice on Friday afternoon.

Game 1, a 2-1 victory for the Rattlers, featured a pitcher's duel between the Hilltoppers' Lauren Slatten and the Rattlers' Jorden Russell.

Both pitchers began the game trading scoreless innings through the first five frames. In the sixth, the Hilltoppers struck for a run following a defensive miscue before the Rattlers would counter in typical fashion. Kristal Salinas would score off a Raynelle Nash double to right center field to tie the game. In the ensuing at-bat, Brenda Iparraguirre would follow suit with a double of her own, scoring Nash as the Rattlers would take the lead for good.

Russell (16-6) tossed a complete game gem, allowing only one run, unearned, on two hits while striking out three. Hannah Michel and Alessandra Ortiz joined Nash and Iparraguirre as the only Rattlers to register a hit in the game.

In the nightcap, St. Mary's wasted little time putting runs on the board. A three-run second inning featured timely baserunning from Ortiz, Elizabeth Phillips, Miranda Medina and new addition, Ciaira Briseno.

Two innings later, the Alena Moreno drove in her second and third runs of the game with a two-RBI double to right center field. Later in the inning, Michel would drive home two more runs with a single up the middle.

Collecting her eighth victory of the season was Hope Russell who improves to 8-1 on the season after tossing 4.2 innings.

Moreno would finish the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored as Medina would go 20f-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

St. Mary's will close out the regular season tomorrow when it hosts St. Edward's at the Softball Stadium at noon.
