Men's Tennis tops UAFS, to face Newman in Heartland title match

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — No. 1 seed St. Mary's Men's Tennis opened up the Heartland Conference championships with a 5-0 victory over No. 4 seed UAFS in Friday's semifinals.

The victory allows the Rattlers to advance to Saturday's championship match, where they will face No. 3 seed Newman at 12 p.m.

Alex Joseph had the decisive point in the Snakes' (16-6) victory, winning 6-0, 6-3 in No. 5 singles.

The Rattlers took the early lead after sweeping doubles play, where No. 1 Adam Dockery and Jeremiah Gonzalez won 8-1; No. 2 Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo cruised 8-2; and No. 3 Bojan Popovic and Alex Joseph prevailed 8-4.

Dockery picked up the other singles win, topping Grady McCain 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. The victory marked Dockery's 17th of the season, which is believed to be the most dual singles victory ever posted by a Rattler in a single season.

The Rattlers will try to add a Heartland Conference tournament championship to the regular-season title it already claimed when they take on Newman on Saturday. The Rattlers beat the Jets 6-3 when the teams met earlier this season.
