Men's Tennis takes first-ever Heartland Conference Tournament title

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — Last season, St. Mary's Men's Tennis won its first-ever Heartland Conference regular-season championship.

Earlier this season, they won their first-ever back-to-back conference titles.

Now? The 22nd-ranked have added their first-ever Heartland Conference tournament championship, taking down No. 3 seed Newman, 5-0, in Saturday's championships final at the SMU Tennis Complex.

Freshman Jeremiah Gonzalez provided the winning point, getting the victory at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-3) over Alejandro Gonzalez.

Adam Dockery also won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4, winning his 18th singles match of the year — unprecedented in school history.

That all followed the Rattlers (17-6) taking a 3-0 lead following doubles play, where partners Dockery/Gonzalez, Michael Maciel/Jose Antelo and Bojan Popovic/Alex Joseph made it a clean sweep.

The Rattlers, assured a regional berth, will now await their fate from the regional committee as they eye the opportunity to clinch their first-ever national championships appearance.
