Moreno's magic: Rattlers strike in 11th hour to stun Eagles

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Rattlers made good of the 11th hour Thursday.

No. 19 St. Mary's Softball struck with three runs in the top of the 11th inning to stun Oklahoma Christian, 7-4, to open a three-game series.

It was fittingly Alena Moreno — who wears No. 11 — that gave the Rattlers the lead with time ticking down. Moreno's RBI single put the Rattlers broke a 4-4 deadlock, while Alyssa Mzoscott followed moments later with a pinch-hit, two-run home run to effectively put the game out of reach.

Extra innings once seemed like a long shot, with the Rattlers trailing 4-0 late in the sixth inning. But Kristal Salinas' RBI triple and a subsequent error drove in both Moreno and Salinas, cutting the lead in half going into the seventh.

It was Moreno again who delivered, tying the game on a two-RBI double to left-center field to send the game to extra innings.

Moreno finished the game 4 of 6 with three RBI and a run scored. Raynelle Nash added three more of the Rattlers' 14 hits on a 3-for-4 outing. Miranda Medina and Alessandra Ortiz each recorded two hits.

But it wasn't all about the offense. Far from it.

Ashley Mills picked up the victory — her 11th — in relief, sparkling for 6 1/3 innings. She allowed just one hit and didn't yield a single run during her time in the circle. She followed Jorden Russell, who allowed two hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings.

The victory gives St. Mary's (36-11, 12-4 Heartland Conference) a two-game lead over Oklahoma Christian (28-19, 10-6 in the Heartland Conference standings. The Rattlers also hold a 1.5 game lead over St. Edward's for first place.

The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.
