#3 Rattlers roll past OPSU, complete sweep

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GRUVER, Texas — Neither the 9 a.m. first pitch nor the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies could slow down the No. 3 St. Mary's Rattlers.

The Rattlers completed a three-game sweep of the Aggies on Friday with a pair of convincing victories, outscoring OPSU 34-1 on the day.

In Game 1, the Rattlers were led by home runs from Brenda Iparraguirre and Marcela Vasquez en route to a 13-1 win.

Iparraguirre finished 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, three RBI and three runs scored while Vasquez posted a 2-for-2 performance at the plate with three RBI, three runs, a home run and a walk.

Picking up the win was Jorden Russell who tossed three scoreless innings, striking out two while allowing only one hit, to improve her record to 13-3 on the season.

Game 2 saw much of the same as the Rattlers continued the onslaught, striking for 15 runs in the top of the first inning.

Iparraguirre, Vasquez, Kristal Salinas, Hannah Michel, Alessandra Ortiz and Olivia Van Hook all homered in the game.

A three-run home run from Vasquez followed by an Iparraguirre solo blast began the proceedings. Two batters later, Ortiz would add a two-run bomb of her own before Kristal Salinas delivered the team's fourth homer of the inning with a grand slam.

Van Hook would drive in three more after going yard an inning later as Michel would put the final run on the board with a solo shot.

Hope Russell collected her sixth win of the season as she, Kristi Rangel and Julia Cruz combined for the two-hit shutout.

The Rattlers will return to action next Tuesday when they visit Texas A&M-Kingsville for a nonconference meeting.
