Men's Tennis claims "Battle of the Saints" victory

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 22-ranked St. Mary's Men's Tennis opened up Heartland Conference play with a 6-3 victory over St. Edward's on Sunday.

The "Battle of the Saints" triumph was sparked by a 3-0 sweep of doubles play, where No. 1 Adam Dockery and Jeremiah Gonzalez prevailed 8-6; No. 2 Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo won 8-4; and No. 3 Alex Joseph and Bojan Popovic won 8-6. 

The Rattlers dropped lines 1-3 in singles, but the rest of the lineup carried the way to victory.

In a competitive series that saw five of six matches go three sets, No. 4 Adam Dockery won 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while No. 5 Alex Joseph prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 for the clinching point.

Richard Foley was the only player to win in two sets, taking No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-3. 

The Rattlers (9-6, 1-0) will return to action Friday, when they face Metro State at 2 p.m. in Pueblo, Colorado.
