Rattlers steal opener, sweep doubleheader against RSU

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Trailing by one with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and an eight-game home winning streak on the line, the St. Mary's Rattlers found some late-game magic in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader against Rogers State at the Softball Stadium.

The Rattlers would score two runs on their way to a 3-2 walk-off victory in Game 1 before taking the nightcap, 7-2, to complete the sweep of the doubleheader.

With Hannah Michel standing on second and St. Mary's down to its last strike, Raynelle Nash popped a single back to the pitcher Megan Rosewell, as the ball deflected off her glove following a valiant, diving effort that went unrewarded. Michel would score on the play after having the presence of mind to capitalize on the broken play.

In the ensuing at-bat, Marcela Vasquez drove in Nash with a booming shot off the wall to left center field.

Nash and Michel would be the only Rattlers to finish the game with multiple hits with Nash going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and Michel finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Jorden Russell added another complete game victory to her name as she tossed seven complete innings on her way to picking up her 11th win of the season.

Game 2 began with each team going three-and-out in the first. An inning later, Rogers State struck for a run. The Rattlers would respond with five unanswered runs over the next three innings including three in the fourth.

Kristal Salinas registered her only hit of the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single. Alessandra Ortiz would add two more later in the inning with a two-RBI single that scored Salinas and Brenda Iparraguirre.

Iparraguirre and Miranda Medina each finished 2-for-3 at the dish as they both combined for three runs scored and two RBI.

St. Mary's and Rogers State will play once more tomorrow at the Softball Stadium at noon.
