Rattlers take down #24 WNMU in Maciel's return

MIDLAND, Texas — With Michael Maciel back in the lineup, No. 23 St. Mary's Men's Tennis pulled off a decisive 8-1 victory over No. 24 Western New Mexico.

After dropping a narrow 9-8 defeat in No. 1 doubles to Western's No. 3-nationally ranked tandem, the Rattlers (5-4) took all of the remaining eight matches for the victory.

But it wasn't easy.

Jose Antelo, Adam Dockery and Alex Joseph each won three-set nail-biters, helping the Rattlers cruise in the overall match score.

Maciel, ranked No. 41 nationally in singles, won in his return at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-4, while Jeremiah Gonzalez prevailed at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2. Bojan Popovic won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.

Earlier in doubles, Maciel and Antelo teamed for an 8-4 victory at No. 2, while Joseph and Popovic were victorious, 8-6, at No. 3.
