Shorthanded Rattlers rally to upset #16 Cameron

SOUTHLAKE, Texas — No. 23 St. Mary's Men's Tennis upset No. 16 Cameron on Friday, earning a 6-3 victory that could potentially prove critical for regional seeding.

Playing without Michael Maciel, who is on an overseas trip through the Greehey Scholars Program, the Rattlers rallied around each other to carry a 2-1 lead into singles play.

The reshuffled lineup saw Bojan Popovic and Alex Joseph pull off an 8-1 victory in No. 2 doubles, and Jose Antelo and Felix Hollaway win 8-3 at No. 3. The Snakes nearly pulled off the clean doubles sweep, with Adam Dockery and Jeremiah Gonzalez falling by the narrow score of 8-6 at No. 1.

St. Mary's carried that momentum into singles, winning four of the six matchups. Joseph won a thrilling three-setter at No. 4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, while the rest of the winning Rattlers took care of action in two sets. Gonzalez prevailed at No. 2, 6-2, 7-5; Dockery won at No. 3, 6-4, 7-5; and Popovic won at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Rattlers will continue action Saturday morning, taking on No. 15 Midwestern State at 11 a.m. in Southlake.
