Softball earns split on Day 1 of NFCA Leadoff Classic

CLEARWATER, Florida — St. Mary's began the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Friday, splitting its pair of games.
 
The day began with the Rattlers defeating Valdosta State, 5-0, behind a two-hit, complete game shutout by Jorden Russell, who struck out five in the victory.
 
A three-run second inning began the scoring with Russell, Miranda Medina and Alessandra Ortiz each scoring.
 
Offensively, the Rattlers were led by Alena Moreno, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Second baseman Kristal Salinas went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI while Brenda Iparraguirre notched a pair of base hits.
 
An RBI single from Moreno would score Salinas in the sixth, putting the finishing touches on the victory.
 
In the nightcap, despite taking the lead in the first inning the Rattlers fell to Florida Tech, 5-2. Five unanswered runs by Florida Tech, including four in the fourth, proved to be too much for the Rattlers.
 
Marcela Vasquez popped a homer in the sixth as she went 1-for-3 at the plate. Iparraguirre also went 1-for-3 with an RBI of her own. Despite the loss, Staci Johns tossed 3.2 innings as she struck out six.
 
On Day 2 of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, the Rattlers will take on Georgia College and Cal (Pennsylvania).
