Historical season for Men's Tennis ends at regionals

LAWTON, Oklahoma — After reaching the South Central Regional Tournament in a season in which they won their first-ever Heartland Conference championship, the No. 24-ranked St. Mary's Men's Tennis Team ended their season, falling 5-1 to No. 15 Cameron on Monday afternoon. 

The Rattlers, who gained an at-Large bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing the season with a 13-12 record and a Heartland Conference Regular Season title. Cameron (15-4) proved to be too much for St. Mary's to handle as they advanced to the NCAA National Championships in Denver later this month.

The Rattlers seemed to gain the early advantage as Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo defeated Vinicius Santos and Andres Velasco by a score of 8-3 to give the Snakes a 1-0 lead.

After a long spell on the sidelines with an injury, senior Brien Galon made his long-awaited return to the courts as he paired with Adam Dockery at No. 1 doubles. Despite Galon's toughness, the pair were unable to come out victorious as they came up just short, falling 8-5 to Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco.

Unfortunately for the Rattlers, it would be all Aggies from then on. Cameron would go on to clinch the spoils in doubles and then win three consecutive singles matches at No's. 2, 3, and 5 to claim the overall win and end the Rattlers' season.

St. Mary's (14-12) ended their most successful campaign to date and will now move on, losing only three seniors in Luke Keller, Matt Banner and Galon.
