Baseball takes two from TAMIU, earns spot in Heartland Tournament

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Baseball was able to walk away victorious in the opening two games of their final home series with Texas A&M International, winning 3-1 and 11-1 Friday.

The victories, paired with two Newman losses against St. Edward's, clinched the Rattlers the fourth and final berth in next week's Heartland Conference Championship Tournament.

In the first matchup of the day, the Rattlers prevailed in a 3-1 decision behind some spectacular defensive showings from Jake Marler and Matt Smith. Smith would also be a key contributor on the offensive side of things, accounting for the first hit of the day with a double in the first inning. Jack Kaiser would bring him home.

Beau Barnes and Donnie Perez would tack on RBI's in the third and sixth innings, respectively.

The Dustdevils would eventually get on the board in the seventh, finally getting to pitcher Chris Jones. The St. Mary's pitcher would only surrender two hits on the day and striking out seven before Trent Rousseau would come in to record the last out for his fifth save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Rattlers would duplicate their earlier efforts by posting a run in the first inning for the early lead after some opportunistic base running from leadoff man Bryan Ramirez.

In the bottom of the third, Smith would continue with the hot bat as he hit a triple and then would score on a throwing error, before Jack Kaiser hit a solo home run to extend the Rattler lead to 4-1.

Keith Funk, who was 4 for 5 in both games, would hit a solo shot himself in the fifth to push the lead to 5-1.

The Rattlers were not done yet, however, with another onslaught of runs coming in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead 9-1 heading into the seventh.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning, Jonathan Ramirez would lead off the seventh with a walk. Funk would get his second hit of the day, driving a double to the centerfield wall to score Ramirez. Bryce Brandl would then step up and drive a single to left, scoring Funk and enacting the run rule to bring the game to an end.

Oscar Sepulveda, who would go six innings, allowed one run on five hits would get his fourth victory on the season, and reliever Nick Garcia would be credited with the his first save. The losing pitcher from the TAMIU Dustdevils (16-31-0, 7-19) was Dustin Labit, who would drop to 3-9 on the year.

With the two wins, the Rattlers now improve to 30-19-0 on the year and now stand at 15-11 in the Heartland Conference.

The series will conclude Saturday when these teams face off at Dickson Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
