Men's Tennis beats Newman to get above .500

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — In a win that saw the men improve above .500 for the first time this season, St. Mary's Men's Tennis defeated Newman 7-2 on Friday in Dallas.
The No. 27-ranked Snakes were able to take an advantage into singles play in their second conference affair as they remained undefeated in the Heartland Conference.

Adam Dockery and Richard Foley defeated Gonzales and Santos at No. 1 8-5, and Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo kept up their astounding doubles record, defeating Pyle and Coiras 8-4.

With the 2-1 advantage going into singles, the men would look to keep the momentum going from doubles. The men would win five of six matches to take the overall win.

Maciel would take the win at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3 against Gonzalez before his doubles partner Antelo would battle to a gritty 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Ebinal at No. 3. Aldo Maldonado would win in straight sets as Maciel did with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Rojo at No. 4 before Hollaway would win a three-set thriller 7-5, 1-6 and 14-12 in the tiebreaker.

The Snakes would round out the victory with Foley defeating Coiras in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

The win improves St. Mary's to 10-9, and the men will look to improve on that record as they take on another conference foe in UA Fort Smith Saturday morning.
