Men's Tennis makes noise with 2-1 record on the week

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ARLINGTON, Texas — In a week of challenging matches, the St. Mary's Men's Tennis team enjoyed a successful upset of the No. 19 team in the nation before splitting a pair of high-profile regional matchups.

The Rattlers started off the week knocking off No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus 5-3 on Tuesday. GA, who is also ranked No. 5 in the region, came into the affair boasting a 14-3 record and eyeing another win. However, the Snakes had other ideas as they took a 2-1 lead after doubles play behind a pair of 8-5 wins from Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo, and Josh Mosseri and Richie Foley.

With the lead intact, Foley would pick up a victory at No. 6 to put St. Mary's in front 3-1.

Aldo Maldonado was inserted for singles play and he would also pick up the victory at No. 3. Adam Dockery, who avenged his loss from doubles, would go on to win a three-set thriller as the Rattlers seized victory to move their record to 8-8. The Rattlers would carry their momentum to Arlington where they were set to face Heartland Conference foe Dallas Baptist.

The day started even better for the Rattlers than in their previous affair as they captured all three doubles points, only dropping a total of four games in the process.

Singles would go much the same as doubles with the Rattlers firing on all cylinders as Maciel, Dockery, Antelo, Maldonado, Holloway and Foley would record straight set wins to take the overall match 9-0.

Trying to stay perfect on the weekend, the Rattlers were tasked to take on Midwestern State in a match that would have regional implications on the line for postseason action. The Mustangs were too much to handle for the Snakes as they came out 8-1 victors, spoiling the Rattlers' perfect week.

In the loss, Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo were able to sustain their remarkable doubles record as they defeated Santagate and Pineda by a score of 8-5.

The Rattlers (9-9) will head back to Dallas on April 8 and 9 as they are set to face Newman and UA Fort Smith.
