FORT SMITH, Arkansas — St. Mary's Baseball racked up 19 runs on 18 hits against UA Fort Smith on Thursday, winning 11-0 and 8-4 to continue its push for the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament.

Bryce Brandl drove in four runs on a 2-for-4 outing in Game 1, and Bryan Ramirez followed with a 2-for-4, 2-RBI effort in Game 2.

But the Rattlers' victories weren't just about their offense.

Chris Jones pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout in Game 1, fanning four over seven innings. Then, in Game 2, Oscar Sepulveda struck out 10 over six innings en route to collecting his third victory of the season.

With the victories, St. Mary's (28-18, 13-10) moved a game past Newman (12-9 in conference) in the win column for the fourth and final spot in the Heartland tournament. Newman begins its three-game series with Rogers State later this week with a chance to remain ahead of the Rattlers with a sweep.

In Game 1, after scoring twice in the opening inning, the Rattlers didn't score again until the fourth, when they grabbed a 5-0 lead on an interesting sequence that including a run scoring on a wild pitch, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

The Rattlers stayed hot in the nightcap, exploding to a 5-0 lead in the first inning to effectively take control the rest of the way. The lead swelled to 8-1 by the third, as the Lions only mustered three runs the rest of the way in response.

The series is schedule to wrap up with Friday's Game 3 at 1 p.m., though the game time might change due to anticipated weather in the area. Stay tuned to RattlerAthletics.com for updates.
