Miles masterful with 9 K's to shut out Chaps, force split

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — Ty Miles was brilliant on the mound Friday evening, striking out nine batters and shutting down Lubbock Christian's high-potent offense in a 1-0 victory to cap off a doubleheader.

Miles' 8 1/3 innings of shutout work, finished off by Hayden Hibler's save, was enough to allow Angel Vega's first-inning RBI single that drove in Matt Smith to hold up as the game-winning score.

Earlier in the day, LCU (17-6) got the better of St. Mary's (14-11), winning 6-1 in the opener. The decisive Game 3 will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.

St. Mary's will look to get back to .500 in Heartland Conference play after improving to 2-3 in league play with Friday's victory in the nightcap.

In Game 1, Lubbock Christian led 6-0 after three innings. Jonathan Ramirez finally got the Rattlers on the board in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to the pitcher, and St. Mary's attack seemed to be gaining steam as it loaded the bases down five runs. But the Rattlers could not pull off the stirring comeback, as LCU forced them into stranding the bases loaded to end the game.

Ramirez and Keith Funk led the offensive attack in the game, as each player went 2 for 3 at the plate. Vega added a hit, as did Kyle Jenkins and Bryan Ramirez. Ramirez added two more hits in Game 2 on a 2-for-4 day, while Smith, Jack Kaiser, Vega and Funk had one hit apiece.

For Miles, the six-hit victory marked his third of the season, while Hibler earned his first save as a Rattler after forcing the final two outs on three batters faced.
