Chaps win finale to clinch series over Rattlers

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's could not silence Lubbock Christian's attack Saturday, as the Chaparrals won 10-5 to clinch the Heartland Conference series at Hays Field.

The Chaps, who took the series 2-1, totaled five runs over the second, third and fourth innings before exploding for three more in the fifth to take a commanding 8-3 lead in the eventual victory.

St. Mary's produced 13 hits and committed one fewer fielding error than LCU, but ultimately could not keep pace with the Chaps' 10 runs.

Angel Vega led the Rattlers with three hits in five at-bats, while Jack Kaiser had a team-high two RBI on a 2-for-4 showing. Vega, Zach Johnson and Bryce Brandl all added on RBI apiece.

Things couldn't have started off any more promising for the Rattlers (14-12, 2-4 in Heartland Conference), who took a 1-0 lead in the first on Brandl's solo home run.

But LCU quickly answered, taking a 2-1 lead off back-to-back RBI singles from Brent Stewart and J.P .Rousseau. Rousseau struck again an inning later, bringing in two more runs on a two-RBI single in the third.

Down 5-1 in the fifth, Vega doubled down the left-field line to bring in Brandl, and Kaiser later added an RBI on a groundout to bring the Rattlers back to a 5-3 deficit. But Lubbock Christian answered once again, scoring three in the bottom of the inning to lead 8-3.

St. Mary's put a dent in the deficit with a run in the sixth and another in the ninth, but couldn't overcome the deficit.

Victor Garza IV suffered his first loss to fall to 2-1 on the season. Garza struck out four over 2 1/3 innings, but scattered six hits as the red-hot Chaps got going early.

St. Mary's will return to action Wednesday for another conference series, when it hosts Oklahoma Panhandle State in Game 1 of the series at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Dickson Stadium. Wednesday's doubleheader will be followed by a 1 p.m. Game 3 on Thursday.
