Men's Tennis edges #28 WNMU for critical regional win

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

MIDLAND, Texas — Two Top 35-ranked opponents. Two wins.

That was the story for St. Mary's Men's Tennis as they upset the No. 28-ranked Western New Mexico Mustangs on Saturday morning in Midland.

After starting the season at 2-7, the Rattlers have reeled off two straight wins in dramatic fashion this week. However, the Mustangs would not have it easy as they would drop two of three doubles matches to start the affair.

Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo continued their impressive doubles record as they garnered yet another crucial victory, defeating Pageault and Fraboulet by a score of 8-4 at No. 2. This victory would be vital heading into singles action.

In singles play, Maciel and Aldo Maldonado would receive walkovers with their opponents unable to finish their respective matches. Putting the Rattlers up 3-2, St. Mary's would drop No. 2 and No. 4 before Richie Foley leveled things up with a resounding 6-4, 6-1 victory over O'Keefe.

With the match hanging in the balance, it would be the man of the hour, Antelo, as he rallied from a set down to notch the victory for the Rattlers with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 decision over Gnilowpov.

The win marks the fourth for the Rattlers, moving their record to 4-8 overall. The Snakes will travel to Colorado next week to take on three RMAC opponents, hoping to keep their winning streak intact.
