Rattlers stay hot at the plate to thump Arkansas-Monticello

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

HOUSTON — No. 12-ranked St. Mary's Baseball enjoyed an impressive showing to close out the Houston Winter Invitational, pounding Arkansas-Monticello 13-5 at the Houston Astros' Minute Maid Park.

Matt Smith went 3 for 5 with three RBI — his third consecutive three-hit, three-RBI performance — and Angel Vega added three RBI of his own to go along with a home run. Cole Hybner picked up the victory to improve to 1-0 on the season after striking out four over 6 innings of work.

Bryan Ramirez and AJ Perez joined Smith in the three-hit department, as the Rattlers exploded for 10-plus runs for the fifth time in six games this season.

St. Mary's (4-2) took a 8-1 lead in the fourth inning when Jack Kaiser doubled down the left-field line to drive in Ramirez, but saw a minor scare late when UAM closed the gap to 8-5 in the seventh.

But the Rattlers responded to score five more over the seventh and eighth innings, including RBI at-bats from Zach Johnson, Kyle Jenkins, Smith and Vega.

St. Mary's wasted no time in putting its stamp on the game, as Smith doubled to right-center field to drive in the game's first run in the opening inning. Kaiser made it 2-0 on a groundout to shortstop that scored Ramirez, and Vega extended the lead to 4-0 on a two-run shot to left field.

The Rattlers produced eight doubles in the game, one short of the school record set against Newman on Feb. 6, 2011.

St. Mary's will be back at it this weekend for a three-game tilt against regional rival Tarleton State. The series gets going with a 3 p.m. single game Friday at Dickson Stadium.
