Rattlers drop opener to Texans

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The #12 St. Mary's Rattlers fell in their first game of a three game set against the Tarleton Texans in an extra inning affair 10-8.

Both teams started strongly on the offensive end and forced the opposing team's pitcher to only toss 4.0 innings. Angel Vega started things off for the Rattler with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. Vega finished the night 3-4 with two runs and three RBI.

The Rattlers also had nice nights out of Zach Johnson who went 3-5 with one run and two RBI, and Jack Kaiser who went 2-5 with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. The homer by Kaiser put the Rattlers ahead 8-7 with a chance to win the game.

However, the Texans were able to come back after they were down to their last strike. Tarleton leaned on a big night from Alec Humphries. Humphries went 5-5 with four RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Landon Merka also performed well going 4-6 with three RBI. The two batters led Tarleton in a 21 hit game. Hunter Houston (1-0) got the win.

The game was a back and for roller coaster between the two teams with both holding the lead multiple times. However, the offense always seemed to come through and forced extra innings.

Tarleton went deep into their bench and bullpen today as they used 15 field players and five pitcher. The Rattlers meanwhile also had to use four pitchers. It will be interesting to see if the two teams will be effected by this as the series continues into tomorrow.

With the loss the Rattlers fall to (4-3) on the season. Tarleton Stateimproved to (4-3). The two teams square off once again tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on RattlerAthletics.com
