Men's Tennis 'adventure' to renew when spring season opens Friday

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — "Adventure."

That's the word that senior Brien Galon used to sum up his career heading into his final campaign on the tennis courts of St. Mary's.

Accompanied by fellow senior Luke Keller, the duo lead a side that they agree to be one of the best connected and hardest working groups they have been a part of.

"Growing up in high school, I didn't know much about teamwork," Keller said. "But since (being at St. Mary's), I've learned a lot about being a team rather than a group of individuals and that stands out to me."

The 2016 Rattlers will look familiar from last term to most as the team lost no seniors to graduation, but managed to add four freshmen who are looking to make an impact in a big way. The new names include Jose Antelo from Bolivia, Ben Bourban of Switzerland, and Texas natives Felix Holloway and Kyle Green

Keller believes head coach Lisa Dausin has brought in players that will add strength in the singles lineup, but it's an intangible off the court that he is most impressed with in the newcomers.

"I feel like when Coach tries to pick someone who would be good for our team, she does more than just look at the level of the player," Keller said. "She really makes sure the player fits in well both in the St. Mary's atmosphere."

Since Dausin has been at the helm for the Rattlers, they have steadily improved every season. The goal of reaching the conference final is no longer the standard for the Snakes, they are looking to reach new heights. The returners, who include juniors Adam Dockery, Michael Maciel, Josh Mosseri, Richie Foley and sophomore Aldo Maldonado, round out a team looking to avenge last season's heartbreaking defeat in the Heartland Conference Tournament.

Their first step of the new "adventure" starts Feb. 5 when they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on Laredo Community College.

One year wiser and being a group who prides their selves on unity, Galon and company are hungry for glory and feel this is the time to make the breakthrough.

"We all have chosen this path and have all had those ups and downs as individuals and as a team, but now we're building," Galon said, "I think we're about to hit the peak and it's going to be nice for men's tennis as a whole, hopefully for years to come."
