Weekend Recap: Men's Tennis splits pair of tough matches

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

MIDLOTHIAN, Texas — In a weekend of tennis action, St. Mary's Men's Tennis split a pair of duals with Ouachita Baptist and East Central University away from home this weekend.

Friday's Recap
The Rattlers dropped the first of two matches against Ouachita Baptist by the close margin of 5-4, despite taking an advantage after doubles. The winners in doubles came by way of Adam Dockery and Brien Galon at No. 1 and Michael Maciel and Jose Antelo at No. 2.

Dockery and Galon were involved in a close one, but prevailed 8-6. Maciel and Antelo made matters much easier, as their 8-2 win put the Rattlers ahead going into singles action.

Adam Dockery continued his winning form with an impressive victory over Macey Braciszewicz by a score of 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. Antelo would follow suit at No. 6 with his own 6-3, 6-1 victory over Luis Chab.

Unfortunately, it would not be enough as the Tigers rallied to win the remaining four singles matches to take the narrow victory over St. Mary's, 5-4.

Saturday's Recap
After the loss on Friday, the Rattlers would regroup in a big way to salvage the weekend as they defeated East Central, 5-4, Saturday afternoon.

Much like Friday, the Rattlers took the majority in the doubles, only dropping one game in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Dockery-Galon would take their victory over A. Fillat-A. Lapiedra 8-1 and Maciel-Antelo won 8-0 to give the Rattlers a 2-1 overall advantage heading into singles.

The Rattlers though, despite having the momentum, would go down 2-4 after three singles decisions went the way of ECU.

Maciel would kick off the comeback push with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Abella at No.1.

Dockery and Luke Keller would have a slightly tougher task as it took the pair three sets to gain the victory.

Dockery outlasted Fillat, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to level the affair at 4 apiece. It would be up to Keller to finish the victory for the Rattlers and he did just that.

The St. Mary's No. 5 would come out victorious against Scholdbauer of ECU by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to give St. Mary's their second victory of the young season.

The Gold and Blue will return to action on Feb. 20 as they take on Tyler Junior College at Rohrbach Stadium. The first serve will commence at 9 a.m.
