Men's Tennis picks up 1st victory of season against Collin County

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

PLANO, Texas — After two losing setbacks against the likes of Laredo Community College and Incarnate Word, the St. Mary's men's tennis team was able to capture their first victory of the young season against Collin County Community College, 6-3, on Thursday.

The Rattlers took the early advantage after doubles play, winning two of the three matches in the balance. No. 1's Adam Dockery and Brien Galon were victorious over the team of Gomez-Chavez without dropping a single game, 8-0. Michael Maciel and freshman newcomer Jose Antelo were not as fortunate as they suffered the loss 8-4 to the team of Gbadamosi-Mckinney at No. 2.

It would be the No. 3 duo of Aldo Maldonado and Felix Holloway that pulled out a close decision over Nguyen-Storman, 9-7, to give St. Mary's the advantage heading into singles action.

In an area that has been a crutch in the opening two matches of the season, the Rattlers were in fine form during singles play, pulling out four of six matches on their way to victory.

These victories would not come easy though as two matches went to three-set tiebreakers. The first of the breakers went the way of Maciel at No. 1 singles. After losing the first set 3-6, he rallied to win the second set 6-0 and continued the momentum to win the tiebreaker 10-7.

Winning sets at love would be a recurring theme for the Gold and Blue with Aldo Maldonado winning at No.4 6-0, 6-4 and reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Week Felix Holloway coming out victorious 7-6, 6-0 at No. 5.

At No. 6, Antelo would round out the Rattler victory in a tough three-setter with the Cougars' Chavez. The Bolivian would drop the first set 3-6, but came back to win the second 6-2, before taking the tiebreaker 10-4.

The win now takes the Rattlers to 1-2 on the year. They will close out a weekend of action starting with Ouachita Baptist University and East Central University in Midlothian, Texas.
