Johnson's walk-off HR earns split for #12 Rattlers

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Zach Johnson smashed a monster, mile-high shot over the left-field wall to give No. 12-ranked St. Mary's Baseball a 8-7 walk-off victory in extra innings over Tarleton State Saturday evening.

Johnson's 10th-inning solo blast at Dickson Stadium capped off a wild comeback for the Rattlers (5-4), who were down to their final strike when Bryan Ramirez swung away for a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

The victory helped St. Mary's avenge a 3-2 loss from earlier in the day to split the doubleheader. Tarleton State won the series 2-1 after winning an extra-innings affair Friday.

In Saturday's series finale, Nick Garcia picked up the victory after pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Garcia fanned three and allowed one hit in the performance.

Johnson led the way at the plate, going 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

St. Mary's was outhit by Tarleton State 13-6, but made the most of  five walks and three errors to scrounge out the win.

St. Mary's took its first lead when Kyle Jenkins scored from third base in the fourth inning, putting the Rattlers up 4-3. Earlier in the inning it was Jenkins' RBI single that evened the score at 3-3, erasing a one-time 3-1 deficit as the Texans opened the game with a run in the first before punching in two more in the second.

But Tarleton State fired right back, reeling off five consecutive hits to score three runs to take a 6-4 lead in the fifth.

The Rattlers came right back, however, scoring two of their own despite producing zero hits in the bottom of the fifth. Tarleton State walked two, hit a batter and had a fielding error to help the Rattlers even the score at 6-6.

But the Texans came right back once more, tacking on a run in the eighth inning of a back-and-forth, seesaw affair.

Earlier in the day, St. Mary's fell 3-2 when the Rattlers struck out to end the game with the tying runner at third base. Donnie Perez helped slice a two-run deficit to one with an RBI sacrifice fly out that drove in Jonathan Ramirez, but the Rattlers couldn't strike again with Jenkins standing at third after Jenkins and Johnson produced back-to-back singles to start the seventh.

Ty Miles took the hard-luck loss, scattering seven hits and yielding three runs, only one of which was earned, over seven innings of work.

Errors hurt the Rattlers throughout, as they committed three errors in the game.

First baseman Jack Kaiser helped erase an early 1-0 deficit when he smashed a monster shot to right field to even the game at 1-1. But the Rattlers wouldn't strike again until the seventh, while Tarleton State scored twice in the fifth to lead 3-1.

Kaiser, who went 1 for 3, and Perez led the Rattlers with one RBI apiece.

St. Mary's will be back in action Tuesday, when they travel to Victoria, Texas to take on Houston-Victoria.
