Strong outing from Hybner drives Rattlers past Wonder Boys

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The #15 St. Mary's Rattlers won the rubber match against Arkansas Tech Sunday improving to 2-1 on the young season.

The Rattlers were victorious 10-7 and were led by strong days at the plate three first year starters: Bryan Ramirez, Angel Vega and Donnie Perez. Ramirez had a 3-for-3 day and reached base five times. The junior transfer student from the University of Texas-Pan American also scored three runs and had two RBI. Vega and Perez both chipped in two hits apiece. Vega scored twice and had an RBI; Perez had two RBI.

The Rattlers also had a strong start from their pitcher Cole Hybner. Hybner, a junior, made his mark in the Rattler bullpen, but now looks to be stepping into a larger role for the team. He went 7.0 innings striking out nine Wonder Boy batters. During one stretch, Hybner retired 12 straight Wonderboy batters.

After the game, Hybner said that one of his keys to success was to win the first inning. He finished with a no decision after leaving the game up 7-3.

Oscar Sepulveda (1-0) ended up notching the win for the Rattlers after the Wonder Boys were able to tie the game 7-7 in the top of the eighth inning. However, the Rattlers managed to storm back to score three runs and secure the ballgame. Brandon Bohuslav of Arkansas Tech ended up taking the loss.

Both teams struggled defensively as the Rattlers committed three errors and the Wonder Boys committed four.

St. Mary's is off to a good start to the season, scoring double-digits in the two victories. The Rattlers will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Houston to play three games over the weekend inside of Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros.
