Rattlers fall short against Wonder Boys

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — After winning the season-opener in impressive fashion, Rattler baseball's bats were held in-check as they dropped a 5-3 decision to Arkansas Tech Saturday at Dickson Stadium.

Both teams managed to put runs on the board in the first frame, with starting pitchers Ty Miles of St. Mary's and Isaac Hale of Arkansas Tech matching each other pitch for pitch and stifling the opposing bats of each respective sides.

It would be the Wonder Boys that would break the deadlock as Klockowski hit an RBI single to right field scoring Kaleb Warden and Mark Vaughn scored on an error by the catcher to put ATU up 3-1.

The Rattlers would strike the following inning when Angel Vega stepped to the plate with bases loaded. He would ground into a fielder's choice, scoring Bryan Ramirez, but that would be all the Snakes could muster up as they still trailed 3-2 heading into the final two innings.

The eighth would remain scoreless, but Warden would hit a two RBI double with the bases loaded to provide insurance heading into the last half inning.

The Rattlers having already stranded 14, were able to put runners on first and third after an RBI single from Beau Barnes. Jan Paul Reguero would step to the plate with tying run on first, but flew out to end the contest.

AJ Perez went 2-for-5 at the plate, scoring a run, as Matt Smith went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

The Rattlers and Wonder Boys will conclude their three game set tomorrow with first pitch at noon.
