Rattlers' comeback falls short in 5th set against rival St. Edward's

AUSTIN, Texas — St. Mary's came all the way back from a two-set deficit to force a decisive Set 5 on Saturday, but St. Edward's shut the door late to prevail 3-2.
 
The Hilltoppers won the "Battle of the Saints" matchup 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 15-11.
 
Freshman Channing Hankins turned in a sensational performance for St. Mary's, recording a team-high 14 kills and 16 points with a team-leading .182 hitting percentage. Tarine Grace and Allison Rose added 11 kills apiece, while Rachael Scicchitano and Maddy Walsh had 24 assists apiece.
 
St. Mary's dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward's improved to 4-8 with a 2-1 league record.
 
The Rattlers battled their way back into the match in the third set, holding off a late Hilltopper frenzy for the 25-22 victory. St. Mary's led the set 21-14 until St. Edward's reeled off nine of 11 points to trail 23-22. But a Hilltopper service error followed by an Allison Rose kill gave the Rattlers the victory.
 
St. Edward's outhit St. Mary's .129-.114 in the match, but the Rattlers outblocked the Hilltoppers 10-8.
 
St. Mary's will be back in action Wednesday, when the Rattlers travel to take on Tarleton State at 7 p.m. in Stephenville, Texas.
