SAN ANTONIO — A third-set rally was not enough for St. Mary's Volleyball on Thursday night, as the Rattlers dropped their home opener 3-1 to Texas-Permian Basin before a crowd of 312.

The Falcons (1-4) held off St. Mary's (2-2) in the fourth set of a spirited match to prevail 26-24, 25-17, 27-29, 25-20.

Freshman Channing Hankins led St. Mary's with 11 kills and a .207 hitting percentage, while setter Rachael Scicchitano led the way in assists with 23. UTPB outhit the Rattlers .109-.092, despite committing three more errors than StMU.

Late in the match, St. Mary's led the fourth set 10-9 before UTPB reeled off seven straight points to take a commanding 16-10 lead. St. Mary's snapped the streak with a point coming out of a timeout, but UTPB battled back to again lead by six, 19-13. After trailing 23-16, St. Mary's rallied to make it 24-20, but fell 25-20 following the match-sealing point.

After trailing for all but the first point of the third set, St. Mary's battled back with three straight points to tie it at 19-19. Moments later, Allison Rose hammered home an emphatic spike to take a 21-20 lead. The Rattlers took the set 29-27 on a Jenna Paul attack that found an open spot in the interior of UTPB's defense to fight their way back into the match.

Set 1 went back and forth, as the teams jockeyed for the lead throughout. In all there were 12 ties, including at 24-24 before the Falcons pulled away with consecutive points, including the decisive point on a Rattler attack error. St. Mary's led the set 17-13 before falling 26-24.

St. Mary's will be back in action Friday, opening the Emerald Beach Hotel-Javelina Volleyball Invitational against host Texas A&M-Kingsville at 12 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas.
