UAFS pulls upset over No.1-seeded StMU in Heartland Tournament

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 21 St. Mary's Baseball is now playing for life as it dropped the opening game of the Heartland Conference Tournament to No.4-seeded UA Fort Smith, 9-2, falling into the loser's bracket.

The Rattlers now face No.3-seeded Texas-Permian Basin at Noon Friday at Dickson Stadium in the double-elimination tournament.

The Snakes couldn't get the bats connecting in the tough loss as Lion Kellen Smith threw a complete-game gem, throwing nearly 150 pitches in the victory.

Kellen allowed seven hits from StMU and two earned runs with Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) being the one able to figure him out, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Maldonado was the only Rattler to record a multiple-hit game on the night.

The Lions (28-19) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead by the third inning that the Rattlers were able to slice in half with an RBI-single from Maldonado in the sixth.

With two outs in the seventh, the Snakes were nearly out of a quick inning but an untimely error allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate as the Lions bumped their lead to 4-1.

But the Lions weren't done yet as they put up another three runs in the eighth and added another in the ninth to put a comeback out of grasp for the Rattlers.

The Snakes sparked in the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out and scored one run off sacrifice fly from Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas), but the Lions were able to shut down any hopes of a late comeback for the 9-2 victory.

Senior ace Matt McClain (San Antonio) was charged with the loss, dropping to 8-3 on the season after tossing seven innings with four strikeouts and five runs, two of which were earned.

The Rattlers fell to 36-13 overall with the loss.

The Rattlers will fight to remain in the tournament as they face an elimination game against the Falcons at Noon Friday at Dickson Stadium.
