Maldonado's walk-off bunt grants StMU thrilling 13-inning victory

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Four and a half hours later, No. 20 St. Mary's Baseball notched its first extra-innings victory on the season Tuesday.

Mario Maldonado's bases-loaded bunt in the bottom of the 13th ended a marathon affair with Texas A&M-Kingsville 9-8 at Dickson Stadium, tying the program's second most innings played in the modern era.

The last time the Rattlers stretched a game into 13 innings was during the 2013 season against Angelo State. The program's longest game in the modern era was a 14-inning battle with Eastern New Mexico during the 2002 season.

The extended, 9-8 victory over the Javalinas was a wild one for both squads as they totaled eight errors between them while together the teams rotated a total of 11 pitchers on the mound.

The Snakes were off to an unfavorable start in the first, giving up four runs for TAMUK (20-15) to take a 4-0 lead but would quickly close the gap with a three-hit, three-run outing in their first at-bat.

By the third the Rattlers would gain a 6-5 lead only for the Javalinas to tie it in the sixth.

The game went tied once more after StMU went up two in the seventh, 8-6, which TAMUK quickly matched in the eighth.

The 8-8 score line from the eighth would remain until five innings later.

To start the 13th, the Rattlers cracked their first hit after going hitless since the eighth off an RBI-single from Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas).

Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) drew a walk with one out with Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas).

With a 2-1 count, Maldonado put down a perfectly placed bunt to score Hamilton to send the Rattlers into celebration with a walk-off, 13-inning victory.

Maldonado's walk-off bunt came is his seventh at-bat on the game, which ties the program's record for the most at-bats in a single game.

On the mound, Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) picked up his first career win as a Rattler after tossing three innings and allowing just one hit.

The dramatic win improved the Rattlers to 26-7 on the season.

The Rattlers return to Dickson Stadium for a huge matchup against rival St. Edward's, which share the tie as the No. 1 team in the league with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Friday.
