WHEW! StMU takes two from SEU with wild walk-off, comeback wins

Victories put St. Mary's ahead of St. Edward's for sole possession of 1st place in Heartland

SAN ANTONIO — In his first taste of the "Battle of the Saints" series, St. Mary's freshman Bryce Brandl helped deliver the Rattlers an instant classic Friday.

Brandl painted a hard-hit liner down the right-field line to score Scott Jones in the bottom of the 11th inning for a walk-off, 1-0 victory over No. 14 St. Edward's at Dickson Stadium.

Rattler ace Matt McClain pitched a gem in a no-decision, pitching 10 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and five hits allowed on 132 pitches for the 20th-ranked Rattlers. Reliever Connor Camacho picked up the victory — his second of the season — after replacing Oscar Sepulveda with two runners on and no outs in the 11th.

St. Mary's victory in Game 2 was nearly as dramatic, as the Rattlers (28-7, 15-2 Heartland Conference) rallied back from a 6-0 deficit in the fourth to win 9-6 to earn the sweep of the doubleheader.

The victories leave St. Mary's leading St. Edward's (27-10) by two games for the Heartland Conference lead entering Saturday's series finale. First pitch of Game 3 is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.

In the series opener, both teams were on the brink of victory multiple times, only to see stellar defense steal away all the momentum.

The Rattlers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth of the regularly scheduled seven-inning game, as shortstop Derek Hamilton led things off with a double down the left line. Jones followed with a single to shortstop, and the Toppers later intentionally walked Mario Maldonado to load the bases.

But St. Edward's closer Cam Hatch closed the door on St. Mary's despite inheriting a seemingly no-win situation when he came in relief for ace Collin Sherrod, who had pitched 8 1/3 spectacular innings.

Later, the Rattlers dodged a similar bad-luck scenario after walking the Hilltoppers' first two batters. With the bases later loaded, reliever Connor Camacho entered and fanned one batter and then forced an inning-ending groundout to give the Rattlers renewed life.

Then entered Brandl, who delivered his second walk-off hit of the season and the Rattlers' fourth walk-off win at Dickson Stadium this season.

Jacob Marler led the Rattlers with a 2-for-4 outing in Game 1, while Matt Smith and Jones also had two-hit outings, as each went 2 for 5.

In the nightcap, St. Mary's showed it could play from behind as well as it could in the clutch.

Trailing 6-0, St. Mary's scored two in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to lead 9-6.

St. Edward's wouldn't go down without a fight, however, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh of the seven-inning affair. But reliever Cole Hybner fanned back-to-back batters and forced a game-ending fly out to right field to earn his second save of the season.

Offensively, Brandl helped get things going with an RBI single in the fourth that scored Jones on the heels of a Maldonado RBI groundout to cut the one-time 6-0 deficit to 6-2.

An inning later, AJ Perez doubled down the right line to trim the gap to 6-3, and Derek Hamilton made it 6-4 on a fly out to left-center field that was just inches away from clearing the fence for a game-tying, three-run homer.

Still, the Rattlers continued to claw as Matt Smith had an RBI groundout to shortstop that cut the gap to one, 6-5.

Then came the Rattlers' three-run, go-ahead sixth inning.

Joe Hermsen singled up the middle to drive in Maldonado to even the score at 6-6. Marler then brought in Brandl on a groundout to second, and Perez singled to center field to score Hermsen.

Starter Kris Gardner was tagged for five runs in the third — including a grand slam off the bat of Gable Whitacre — but battled back for a resilient and well-earned victory to improve to 8-2 on the year. The senior allowed just one run after the tough third inning, showing why coaches Charlie Migl and Chris Ermis trusted leaving the wily veteran on the mound. His poise helped set the table for the Rattlers' comeback, as Gardner fanned five in the game as the Rattler bats chipped away at the deficit.
