Early lead not enough as Men's Tennis drops 5-4 decision to Cameron

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAWTON, Okla. — Trying to rebound from a disappointing loss to the No. 13-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs, St. Mary's Men's Tennis lost a close decision to South Central Regional opponent Cameron, 5-4, on Friday.

The Aggies (10-8), who came in five spots ahead of the No. 35 Rattlers in the national ranking, boast the No. 2 ranking in the region. For the Rattlers, the loss proved to be their third consecutive.

It looked as if it might be the Rattlers' day as they climbed out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of play.

No. 1 team of Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) and Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) defeated Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazendeiro in a close one, 8-6. Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) and Josh Mosseri (So., Montreal) were not as fortunate as they lost to the No. 2 team of Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco 9-7.

The No. 3 team of Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) and Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) proved to make the difference as they defeated Florian Kartner and Andres Velasco 8-4 to give StMU the slight advantage.

This would not be the story in singles, however, as Cameron took four of the possible six matches.

St. Mary's would struggle to keep the momentum of their doubles triumphs, but not before Maciel and Dockery both won their matches at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Maciel defeated Merdan by a score of 7-5, 6-2, and Dockery disposed of Oyarzun in a seesaw three-setter 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

But the wins would halt there for the Snakes as they were unable to clinch the victory.

Fazendeiro defeated Maldonado at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2; Richard Foley (So., Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland) lost to Angelo Lencioni 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot; Velasco would take care of Alberto Rodriguez (So., San Francisco, Panama) 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5; and Mosseri would drop a close first set and ultimately the match to Justin Baciu at No. 6, 7-6, 6-3.

The loss drops the Rattlers to 5-8 on the season. They will try to get back to their winning ways April 10 when the travel to Dallas to take on Heartland Conference opponent Newman.
